Used as an introduction to newspaper report writing based on the Titanic. A PowerPoint and sorting activity which investigates the features of newspaper reports based on the Titanic disaster. These challenge children to identify and explain the different features within newspapers. Print off examples and invite children to highlight the different features they have found before they go onto to designing, planning and writing their own newspaper reports.

An activity linked to Titanic newspaper report writing in which children change a series of direct speech sentences into reported speech sentences for their newspaper reports. Within the PowerPoint are some recorded direct speech sentences for the children to listen to and change into a reported speech sentence before they complete their activities.

Children investigate the characters from the first chapter, Chapter 1: “The Shilling Pie” [Pages 15-20]. Children are shown a range of passages which provide information about the characters and are challenged to discuss what each quote tells us about the characters and how they have been described.
